What We Do
Reef Dermatology is a direct-pay medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology practice.
We offer transparent fee-for-service comprehensive medical dermatological exams, procedures, and surgeries.Because we are not in any insurance carriers' network, no referrals are necessary.Superbills for services rendered can be provided, which can be submitted as a claim for insurances that have approved reimbursement for out-of-network providers.

Out Of Pocket Expenses
Office visit fee: $250.
This fee includes in-office testing and most minor procedures/treatments performed the same day. Examples of included procedures & treatments: precancerous spot treatments, skin tag removals, wart treatments, skin care regimen advice, etc.Biopsy per site: $125 (does not include a third party dermatopathology fee).
Most local insurance plans cover these third-party services, but it may generate additional charges due to deductibles and copays. Some insurance companies (HMO, Tricare and Quest plans) often will not cover third party services without a preauthorization or referral from a primary care doctor. For these patients and non-insured patients, discounts are available via the dermatopathology lab.Other available services:
Skin surgeries (skin cancer, cysts, lipomas, earlobe correction, scar correction), neurotoxins (botox), soft tissue augmentation (filler, Juvederm). Please call to inquire.No Surprises Act Good Faith Estimate
Per the “No Surprises Act”, here is the Good Faith Estimate of what you could pay for medical services at Reef Dermatology.
For new patients: Service Code 99204 New Patient Visit: Level 4 $250
For existing patients: Service Code 99214 Established Patient Visit: Level 4 $200
This estimate does not apply for services that are not traditionally covered by insurance such as cosmetic services.

Bio
Jose Angel Gonzalez, MD, FAAD is a board certified dermatologist and a Carlsbad High School alumnus who returned to North County to serve his community with a global perspective. Dr. Gonzalez believes all patients deserve to be seen by a physician possessing the highest level of qualifications and training.While folks can find healthcare and cosmetic-care from a variety of providers, it is the practice's core belief that preeminent care should be accessible and attainable to anyone who prioritizes it.Dr. Gonzalez earned his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, majoring in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Economics. Dr. Gonzalez then worked as a formulation scientist at a pharmaceutical biotechnology company. After his tenure in the biotech field, Dr. Gonzalez earned his Medical Degree from Brown University. During his research year between graduating Brown and beginning residency training, he was awarded a NIH-funded competitive research fellowship under renowned dermatologist Dr. James Krueger at Rockefeller University in New York City, where his work regarding autoimmunity in psoriasis was published in peer reviewed journals. The doctor then completed his dermatology residency as Chief Resident in New York City at Northwell, the city's largest health system.Dr. Gonzalez embodies lifelong learning-- both as a passion project for himself, and for the benefit of his patients. His time abroad at the Università di Bologna Italy, working with leading nail and hair expert Dr. Bianca Maria Piraccini and psoriasis expert Dr. Federico Bardazzi, further fueled his eagerness to saturate the Southern California dermatology field with cutting-edge experience.While the doctor unequivocally devotes his time and livelihood to all medical aspects of dermatology, his interest in cosmetics was inspired while working first hand with celebrity dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal at Northwell's state-of-the-art cosmetic clinic. Dr. Gonzalez's refined surgical skills were cultivated working directly with Northwell's Director of Dermatologic Surgery & Mohs Micrographic Surgery Dr. Victoria Sharon, and his medical dermatology style follows in the footsteps of leading dermatologist Dr. George Han.Consistent with his community-driven values, Dr. Gonzalez always reserves time to provide care to underserved populations in San Diego, having previously served in student-run free clinics and medical clinics in Honduras.When he is not in the office, the doctor is fortunate to catch up on his reading. An avid reader of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, JAMA Dermatology, and the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Gonzalez keeps himself busy and informed. The doctor and his wife Rachel enjoy history documentaries together, and volunteer locally with animal care.Dr. Gonzalez is fluent in English and Spanish.

Reef Dermatology may use and disclose your protected health information, without your written consent or authorization, for certain treatment, payment and healthcare purposes. These include, but are not limited to:
- Providing, coordinating, or managing healthcare and related services by one or more healthcare providers.
- Referrals to other providers or health agencies for treatment Activities undertaken by Reef Dermatology to obtain reimbursement for services provided to you.
- Contacting healthcare providers and patients with information about treatment alternatives.
- Protocol development, case management, or care coordination.
- When required by law, for example reporting abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or injuries believed to occur as the result of a crime.
- For public health reasons. We are required to report certain infectious diseases to public health authorities.
- Workers compensation: we may disclose your health information to insurance or government agencies.It is our practice to use your information to contact you with appointment reminders. You must notify us if you do not wish to receive appointment reminders or contact in regards to certain treatment alternatives and services.You have the right to examine your own health record and/or right to obtain a copy of your own health record 7 working days of our receipt of your written request and payment. You also have the right to request corrections in your medical record. We may not disclose your protected health information to family members or friends who may be involved with your care without your written permission. Health information may be released without written permission to a parent, guardian, or legal custodian of a child, guardian of an incompetent adult, the healthcare agent designated power of attorney for an incapacitated patient, or the representative or spouse of a deceased patient.CONSENT TO RECEIVE TEXT MESSAGES & VOICE CORRESPONDENCE:
By contacting our office you authorize RD to contact me by SMS text message & voice correspondence via our electronic health record system, Practice Fusion. PHARMACY CONSENT: I expressly consent and agree that RD may access my prescribed medications from my pharmacies. I may revoke this consent at any time by notifying RD.
